Attempts to watch western movies have been a general
trend for young people. Its contributing factors could be that they do not want
to lag behind from international trend and that foreign movies are generally
well produced with harmonious trinity. In this essay, the reasons why people
are in pursuit of films from other countries will be discussed along with my
strong belief that the state needs to protect local film industry.
First and foremost, in my perspective, it has been a
widely pervasive sense of cultural change amongst young people to pursue
western movies. From the result of survey conducted by Movie Research Institute
in 2016, those young people showed a high tendency with 57.8% to prefer foreign
films since all of scenario writers, movie directors and leading actors are
generally collaborating so effectively that the harmonious trinity captivates
people, unlike locally produced movies. However, there are a multitude of
critics who claims that the state needs to take wise actions to protect local
movie industry.
At this juncture,
it is advisable for the governmental body to take monetary support into
account. Locally produced movies are, generally speaking, less respected by the
public due to the following three grounds such as poorly organized plot, inexperienced
movie directors and last but not least unskilled acting skills. This stems from
the lack of financial support from the government. Compared with the most
viewed movies made by “the giants”, say, “Hollywood”, it is a well-known fact
that there are a tons of investors as they strongly believe high investment can
guarantee high return. In Korea, the Ministry of Culture has failed to look at
the necessity of financial support to boost movie industry. This is why a
majority of local people have been blaming the government’s negligence and
indifference on investment. It is not surprising once we find out the research
result conducted by the Institute of Korean Movies Supporters revealing 58% in
lack of investment from the government, 22% in lack of research and development
from movie distributors and 20% in lack of people’s interest in local movies.
As addressed
above, we discussed the underlying causes that young people are crazy about
western movies with a low level of interest in local films and a growing demand
of the governmental financial care to revitalize domestic movie industry. This
brings to the end with my personal view that the Korean government is highly
recommended to fully support domestic movie markets to dynamize our own movie
industry and this will, in turn, protect movie industry.
