When it comes to the choices of major for university students, there is a growing debate over whether they depend on students' own decisions or needs for the future society. Although others think that some conducive studies for developing society such as science and technology should be strongly recommended for students, I believe that students must choose the area for studying in universities on their own.
It is clear that it is efficient and productive when exploring and studying with their own will. Most modern countries are in democratic and capitalism system which guarantees a citizen's free choices, for instance what to do, where to live, or what to spend. This is because it makes the best consequences, and it is same for the studies in the university. In addition, if a student studies some areas that do not interest them, it can be less innovative and this continues same to the industry. Innovative thinking and outcome is based on spontaneous academic curiosity.
Also, there is no unworthy study for the present of future life. Even the science or technology that is used for real commodities needs other area of studies. For example, smartphones which are at the peak of present IT industry, are partially made by specialists in psychology, sociology, philosophy and so on. It is because knowing what people need and like is important for them in the society where all things are connected. It is human that uses the technology and the outcome of science, so humanities that explore human are necessary even for the scientific areas.
To sum up, university students make their own decisions on their study because it is more academically and practically efficient and all studies are equally important. |
