The government's necessary action of dealing with the increasing health problems due to fast food is said to be imposing a higher tax on it. While I agree that the higher tax on fast food could prevent the increasing number of health problems, I believe the drawbacks outruns the benefits.
Many people are in favor of consuming fast food because of its convenience and affordable price. Despite the health issues that come along, its cheapness provides opportunities for the people to save money for later use. Therefore, a higher tax than before would cause a great burden to the consumers of fast food, thus decreasing the demand eventually and gradually. Being unable to save from eating fast food would then shift a great number of people to other kinds of food sources that are not as much critical to health as the fast food. As a result, the issues of growing health problems from consuming too much fast food would decrease, creating a healthy society.
Although imposing a higher tax on fast food brings a result of decreasing health problems, there are several drawbacks. A major factor is the negligence of a one's freedom. Imposing the higher tax is compelling the consumers of the fast food to pay extra, while other non-fast food consumer does not need to pay extra for their meals. Another factor is that the meat consumers are also in serious health problems as much as the fast food consumers, so the high tax would not help these people. Additionally, wealthy people won't feel any differences in the price than before, therefore continuing to eat fast foods.
In conclusion, imposing a higher tax on fast food would bring more drawbacks to the people than the benefits, such as limited freedom and the wealthy people having no effect on the tax.
