There is some disagreement over whether
television and movies have more negative influences than positive influences on
children’s action. Some people believe that watching movies and television
shows is advantageous as children can gain a variety of educational information
with great ease. However, in my opinion, television and movies do more harm
than good for children’s behavior. This is because, these medias may lead
children to behave in an inappropriate way and these will have detrimental
effects on their physical health.
To begin with, by watching movies
and TV shows, children can be misled to behave dangerously without any cautious
minds. It is no secret that children usually have difficulty to differentiate
between reality and fantasy. Since children are too obsessed with fantasy on
screen, they are likely to regard themselves as a TV or movie character on
their favorite animations or shows. This circumstance is extremely dangerous
according to one article about a child who fell down from a cliff while
imitating a movie stunt. The child’s excessive level of groundless confidence,
which made him act like a movie stunt, was based on a magical capacity of the character
of one fantasy movie. Had it not been for the fantasy movie, the child would
not have tried the risky actions imitating the movie stunt. The article
strongly affirms that television and movies cause children to be placed in such
dangerous situations.
On top of that, as far as children’s
physical health are concerned, medias have a negative impact not only on their eyesight,
but also their weight gain. These days, children spend too much time on
watching movies or shows on television, which is extremely harmful to their
eyesight. Children who spend their most free time on watching screen, do not
have enough chances to see far distance because they only incline to
concentrate on near screen. Moreover, since they do not enjoy screen-media in
physically active conditions, they live in sedentary lifestyle in general.
Sedentary lifestyle is a significant contributor to childhood obesity which is
very harmful for their overall health and well-being. For example, my
ten-year-old nephew spend all his free time on watching TV and movies, which
causes her eyesight to decline drastically. Also, his doctor warned him to stop
watching TV and movies, but to start physical activities with the aim of weight
loss. As he reduced movie times, he began to lose his weight and his eyesight
became better than before. Based on his experience, since physical health is especially
important to growing children, television and movies do more harm than good
regarding physical health.
To sum up, children’s behaviors are negatively affected by television and movies. This is because these media
can lead children to risky behavior and it also keep them from staying healthy.
For these reasons, I strongly agree with the statement that television and
movies have more negative influences on children’s behavior.
