LEASING AGENT: Good afternoon. RK Property
Management.,,this is Linda speaking.
CALLER: Hi, Linda. I’ve recently moved from
London to Toronto for work. I’m looking for a flat, and my company recommended
speaking to you about finding one.
AGENT: All right, sir. Well, let’s narrow
down your options to start with. Are you in the market for a single room – like
a studio? A one-bedroom or two-bedroom perhaps?
CALLER: I’ve no wife or kids to speak of –
it’s just me – so a two-bedroom would be overkill. I’m thinking a one-bedroom.
A studio could potentially work, too, but only if it’s spacious enough.
AGENT: OK – our company has a few buildings
that offer one-bedroom units. Now, where’s your office located?
CALLER: I’m working at the stock exchange
downtown…you know, in the central business district. And I’m only here
temporarily – I have no plans to stay in Canada long-term – so I’m not going to
buy a car here.
AGENT: I understand. So I’m guessing you’d
like something within walking distance of work, or at least a place that’s
accessible by public transit from downtown and vice-versa. Is that right?
CALLER: Exactly. I’m prepared to spend a
little extra to stay downtown if need be.
AGENT: Well, if money is no object, then I
have quite the place for you.
CALLER: Go on…
AGENT: Just yesterday one of our finest
one-bedroom units came on the market at Harbour View. It’s a mixed development
on Bay Street…it features a mix of luxury apartments and upscale condos. The
unit I’m talking about is on the twenty-seventh floor and looks out over the
bay.
CALLER: And what sort of amenities does it
feature?
AGENT: Well, floor-to-ceiling windows for
starters to make the most of your view. Hardwood floors, granite countertops
and high-end stainless steel appliances in the kitchen, one-and-a-half
bathrooms, a spacious living room…
CALLER: Sounds really spacious.
AGENT: It is. We’re talking around 120
square meters.
CALLER: Wow, OK. And you said it’s right
along the bay, correct? Uh…I’ve only been in town for a week, so I don’t really
know the city’s layout.
AGENT: It’d take
you less than ten minutes to walk to work. You wouldn’t even need to take the
subway or a bus, although stops for both of them would be right outside your
building.
CALLER: Nice. And the rental term?
AGENT: It’s month to month. In fact, the last tenant in the apartment was in
Toronto on business from Europe as well…lots of people in the building are from
out of town originally because most of the leases are month to month like that.
CALLER: Everything
you’ve described to me sounds perfect. Where do we go from here?
AGENT: Well, when
are you looking at moving in?
CALLER: I’ve got
another week at the hotel I’m currently staying at, so if I could move in by,
say, next Saturday, that’d be perfect.
AGENT: We could
certainly accommodate that. So, I guess the next step would be to have you stop
by in order to take a look at the place.
CALLER: If you’re
open on Sunday, that would be perfect for me. Early afternoon preferably.
AGENT: Let me
see…um, I could fit you in for a 2 o’clock. How’s that?
CALLER: Great. And
if I like the place…
AGENT: You’d need
to put down a deposit…25 per cent of the monthly rent. And you’ll have to fill
out an application, of course…you can do it online if you’d like. We’ll need a
day or two so we can look into your credit, do a background check – all the
formalities – and then you’ll be able to move in once you’ve given us a
security deposit and first and last month’s rent, less your initial deposit, of
course.
CALLER: Right…OK.
Sounds pretty standard.
AGENT: So Sunday at
2:00 it is. Before you go, can I take down your name and some contact
information?
CALLER: Of course.
David Whitney. That’s W-H-I-T-N-E-Y. And my phone number is…give me a moment
since I don’t know it yet. Yes. 4-1-6--8-2-3—9-1-1-8.
AGENT: All right, Mr. Whitney. I’m looking forward to meeting you this Sunday.
CALLER: Likewise.
Enjoy the rest of your afternoon.
AGENT: And you as
well…goodbye.
