A few days ago, on YouTube, I watched a video of a Korean woman and a foreign man talking about their values and issues. Their personal information, such as their name and nationality, was not revealed. They talked to each other for about 13 minutes, asking questions like ‘Are you the type to line up for a famous restaurant?’ or ‘Are you the type to express your feeling right away when you feel uncomfortable?’ That was an interesting and light conversations. But the man’s answer to one of questions was very interesting to me. The question was, ‘Does Korean’s standards of beauty need to be diversified?’. The Korean woman answered ‘no’ and he said it has to be changed. She talked about her reasons based on current trends and social perspectives, and I agreed with her. As you know, there are formulaic pretty women in Korea. They are slim, and have small faces, big eyes and high noses. Most of Koreans are familiar with the criteria and try to fit themselves to it. But his answer made me realize I was wrong. He argued that the problem is the standards are socially set. He said that everyone has their own personalities, experiences and different environments, so some people like the women who have small eyes. Also, the most important thing he said was that women don’t have to dress and make up according to other people’s standards. And people must not force others to do what they want. Until now, I had tried to meet the standards set by society even if I had complaints about it. I had put on makeup and lost weight to be that pretty woman. What the man said led me to rethink about the things I took for granted. So, just to sum up, his interesting opinion has led me to change my standards of beauty and my values of life.
