One of
the common measures to mitigate crime in major cities is deployment of CCTV, closed
circuit television, system. The presence of security surveillance and CCTV
in our society has fuelled a heated debate over privacy versus safety and security. I
personally argue that the advantages of the cameras are far more significant
than its privacy issue.
To begin
with, some people claim CCTV cameras in public places invade their privacy. Every
individual has their own private life, which doesn’t want others or the government
to know. If there are cameras which monitor you in public, people may feel they
are being spied upon at any time by authorities no matter how innocent. That is
why the security cameras are considered as an infringement on people’s civil liberties.
However, I believe that the surveillance cameras bring enormous
benefits to our society. Firstly, the cameras has been using for arresting
criminals as evidence in high-crime areas while prosecutors
can utilise it as proof against the offender. This is the most
effective way to prove the identity of suspects and save courts time and money.
Secondly, visible security cameras can be a
cost-effective way to deter and reduce crimes. If an individual knows that there are live surveillance
cameras in a certain area, they may be less willing to commit a crime near the
location due to the fear of being caught. Lastly, security cameras provide safeguards for the public
with an increased sense of security and reassurance, particularly for the minors
such as children, women and the elderly.
In conclusion, I
personally believe that there are undoubtedly huge advantages to the deployment
of surveillance cameras as it has an instrumental role in preventing and reducing
crimes, however, the cameras must be operated only for the crime prevention
purposes and authorities should consider privacy issues stringently.
