Some museums charge admission but ohters do not. There could be positive and negative factors, but I think that there could not be only one correct anwser because it depends on the purpose of the museums and their programs.
When the purpose of museum is to attract more public interests as much as possible, free admission will be much more beneficial. If it is free to enjoy the museum, more poeple can visit them and learn from their program more easily. In the perspective of museums, they can achieve the purpose of the program, so it could be a win-win solution. From my experience, I vistited American Indian Museum in NYC last year, and I learned many significant things about them there. However, if there were admission fees, I was likley not to visit the museum, and I still do not know about American Indians that much.
On the contrary, free adimission for museums is not always positive, if their purpose is not a public campaign or the program is run by enough subsidies from other organizations. Museums and the programs always have something to display which are usually very precious properties or art works of others. If the admission is free, the museum can not make profits and it can not pay for the poeple who helped it and its program. Usually, artists and creators need supports, especially money, if they are not paid reasonably, the relationship between museums and artists would be destoried in the long run. Finally, that is definitely negative to visitors as well.
In conclusion, I believe the advantages of free adimission for museums does not always outweight the disadvantages, because it depnds on the purpose of museums and the programs.
