2009 PSAT 문제분석(퍼옴)
지난 10월에 시행되었던 PSAT 영어문제를 정리해 보았습니다. 많은 학생들이 SAT시험보다 더 어려웠다고 하더군요. PSAT는 National Merit Scholarship의 장학생들을 선발하기 위한 저학년용 시험으로, SAT보다는 문항수가 적고, 난이도가 낮다고 생각하는 경우가 일반적입니다.
하지만 실제로 많은 문제들이 SAT시험에 형태만 바뀌어서 그대로 출제되는 예가 많습니다. 따라서 9~11학년 학생들은 PSAT가 SAT와 같다고 생각하고 더욱 신중히 준비하고, 연습하는것이 바람직합니다. 보통 PSAT점수에 10을 곱하면 SAT점수라고 이해하시면(예: PSAT 180=SAT1800) 큰 무리가 없지만, 실제로 SAT점수가 그것보다 높게나오는 경우도 많습니다.실례로 10월 PSAT에서 180점대의 한 여학생은 12월 SAT에서 2040점을 받기도 했습니다.
1.어휘문제(reading section)
spirit away : to carry off mysteriously or secretly (몰래 치우다)
dole out : to give out sparingly or in small quantities (조금씩 나누다)
break up : to seperate or scatter (분리하여 나누다)
peremptory : leaving no chance for denial; imperative (거절할수없는 명령의)
perfunctory : performed merely as an uninteresting or routine duty (흥미없이 그냥 대충하는)
grapple with : to struggle or contend (투쟁하다.맞붙다)
appropriate : to take to or take possession of (소유하다)
alarmist : tending to raise alarms by exaggerating dangers (놀라게하는)
timely : occuring at a suitable time; seasonable;opportune (시간상 적절한)
boorish : rude; unmannerly person (무례한)
grainy : of photograph or TV picture, not sharp or distinct (화면이 뚜렷하지않은)
complacent : self-satisfied; pleased (자기 만족의)
emote : to show or affect emotion (감정을 표현하다)
exhort : admonish urgently; to give advice (충고하다)
pontificate : to speak in a pompous manner (거만하게 말하다)
remonstrate : to say in protest, objection or disapproval (반대하다)
feckless : ineffective,;incompetent;feeble (효과없는, 연약한)
halcyon : peaceful;tranquil (평화로운) ; wealthy;prosper (번영하는)
onerous : troublesome; oppressive (문제가 많은, 억압하는)
summation : an aggregate or total (합산)
outlandish : grotesquely strange or bizzare (이상한, 정도에 벗어난)
gruff : rough; harsh (목소리가 거친); surly (화가난)
noncommittal : not involving to give in trust (약속하지않은)
2.문법문제(writing section)
-가정법(subjunctive mood)
가정법중 미래를 추측하는 경우는 항상 다음과 같은 동사형태를 갖습니다.
IF residents WERE TO separate recyclable materials, the cost of disposal WOULD be reduced.
(If~were to, ~would ~)
가정법중 과거완료의 경우는 항상 다음과 같은 동사형태를 갖습니다.
IF he HAD requested help, Fran WOULD HAVE been happy to assist.
(If~had pp , ~would have pp~)
-도치문장(inverted sentence)
문장이 위치나 방향을 강조하려할때, 순서가 바뀔 수 있습니다.
Along one wall of the kitchen STANDS(X) fine oak cupboards.
(Fine oak cupboards가 주어이고, stand가 동사이며, along one wall이 위치를 나타내므로 STAND가 옳은표현)
=Fine oak cupboards STAND(O) stand along one wall of the kitchen.
-동명사(gerund)
동사중에는 ~ing(Gerund)와 함께 사용되거나, to~(Infinitive)와 함께 사용됩니다.
When he SUGGESTED to build(X) the US Capitol....
(suggest는 ~ing와 함께 사용되므로, When he suggested building(O) the US Capitol...이 옳은표현)
예) Father suggested going on a picnic.(O)/ Father suggested me to go on a picnic.(X)
-so to speak 와 literally의 차이
so to speak : figuratively speaking(은유적으로 이야기할때 사용함)
literally : word for word (글자 그대로 표현하면 이라는 의미)
When the members of a debate team practice, they are, so to speak(O)/literally(X), gathering pieces of information into a mental folder.(학생들은 말하자면 머리속 폴더에 정보를 보관한다.)
