Some people
might say that it is more difficult for teachers in the past to educate
children, adding that this is because there were not so many resources of
teaching and learning materials in the past. However, in my opinion, educating
children is a harder task today than it was in the past in that children spend
their time on their screen for online games and social networking Website too
much. There are two reasons for my statement.
First,
most people in modern society are seen to be addictive to their smartphone. This
is because they have come to depend on the smartphone in terms of many aspects
in their daily life such as networking, scheduling, alarming, and searching
information. Children imitate what their dependent parents and teachers and they
become dependent on the smartphone, too, resulting in serious distractions in
their classroom. There is a study conducted by Korean Educational Psychology
Institute with 100 students in order to determine a smartphone’s influence on
students. 50 students are asked to study 50 math questions without any screen
like smartphone and the other 50 students are asked to do the same thing but
their smartphones are controlled. The latter group students mostly choose more
than 40 right answers, but most students in the latter group choose only 8 or 9
right answers. This is because students in the latter group were continuously
distracted by their smartphone during their practice.
Second,
most young people these days have weaker capacity to concentrate on something
than children in the past. This is because most content in smartphone encourages
people only to consume visual entertainment and to be passive, resulting in
children’s low capacity to think and reason. For example, in South Korea, the
national academic performance exam has carried out since 1985. The whole
students’ average score of mathematics in 1988 was 89 of 100, while the average
score in 2015 was only 54. The average scores of all subjects in the exam has
continuously declined again and again, corresponding to a spread of smartphone.
To sum
up, people in modern society are mostly addictive to smartphone and young
people nowadays have lower capacity to concentrate. For these reasons, it is
more difficult for teachers in these days to educate children.
