It it a no-brainer that cars have more influence over society than airplanes, especially in South Korea. Since significances of these two transportations vary according to country, I would like to focus on South Korea, where I live, for my thesis and examples. Therefore, my essay asserts that cars are more important for society than airplanes ‘in South Korea’. The importance of automobile over airplane is stated in terms of its impact on three domains: politics, economics and society-the daily life of citizens. To begin with, automobile in Korea is highly related to its politics due to the rich group of corporations called ‘Chabeol’. Heads of ‘Hyundai’ and ‘Kia’, the two largest automobile corporations in the South Korea are run by one family that keeps enormous portion of money in South Korea. Chaebols in South Korea have a secret yet powerful and gigantic connection with the politicians, enabling them to manipulate the country to some extent. On top of the unrealistic wealth they possess and its impact on overall economy of South Korea, large corporations themselves are directly connected to Korean economy. Since South Korea is controlled not only by Chabeols but also large corporations, fluctuation of every such company is critical to overall economics. Besides, automobile is the transportation that facilitates citizens transfer around quicker. It saves their time and energy of each citizen, leading them to a more productive economic activity, Despite well-organized subway and train system of Korea, automobile is still the largest transportation, either in terms of bus or personal car. Moreover, cars are used in citizens’ everyday lives to reach anywhere near or far. In particular, cars are essential to reach somewhere with no public transportation available. There are certain limitations to connect the entire country by train. Mountains that take large portion of entire country land is one reason. Since a lot of Korean land is unreachable by public transportation, it would be a loss of land as well as connection of the entire country to remove the existence of cars. Airplanes, on the other hand, do not have as much impact on South Korea. It might give similar influence over the politics as Korean flight industry attain as large corporations. Yet, it is not comparable in terms of economics and general society. Without airplane, South Korea would get a damage for the lack of trade via airplane. However, most of trades with other nations are done through the use of ships rather than airplanes. In terms of social life, Korea would encounter a huge inconvenience due to lack of flight. Globalization would slow down, people would not be able to move around anywhere they want. Many of the connections with foreign countries would be lost as well. However, it does not entail as large danger as recession of connection within country. The country itself has to live on its own before reaching out to another.
In that sense, cars have much larger impact on Korean society than airplanes.
