Charging a person who drives his or her own car a fee during rush hour seems to be unjustifiable. However, I think the government should charge a congestion fee for the greater good. The reasons are that it contributes to protecting the environment and shorten the commuting hours of many workers. To begin with, congestion fee urges people to seek other means of transportation. The more people take a bus or subway, the less smoke is emitted. This is greatly conducive to the environment, especially in terms of air pollution. The case of Seoul is a really good example. A few decades ago, the local government charged drivers in the center of the city a fee during rush hour and workers started to look for ways to dodge the fee. The number of users of subway and bus has skyrocketed and fewer cars were showing on the street. Consequently, the quality of air had improved strikingly. On top of that, it lets many workers go to work or home faster. By charging car drivers during rush hour, people eventually get to save a lot of time. For instance, a friend of mine commute to work by his own car. He says he gets stuck in a traffic jam every morning and evening. He waste almost an hours in his car every day. I recommended taking a bus he said there's no point taking a bus with everyone takes his or her own car. His small effort to use public transportation wouldn't enhance the situation of the entire street at all, which lend support to the idea that the traffic must be diminished as a whole by the government by charging a congestion fee. To sum up, charging drivers during rush hour in a crowded city a fee is of help to prevention of further environmental contamination and cut the time commuters spend on the street. In this regard, I strongly hold that congestion fee should be imposed during rush hour. |
