▶ Your Answer :
There are key rights of humans, and one of them is their freedom. Some people assert that freedom is able to overcome other things and it should not be infringed in any circumstances. However, in my opinion, it is sometimes acceptable to infringe upon people's freedom. Before I mention my reasons, let me give some premises on when should we infringe upon people's freedom. It should be when they disobey the law or give clear harm to other individuals or society. In certain circumstances, it could also be harming themselves or other material that is not a human being. To begin with, it is principally justified for freedom to be limited. Let's look at the premises that I have mentioned. In cases of law, it is very important because we all as individuals living in a society, or a nation with other individuals, have agreed on the social contract where we should keep the law and the government should provide us our rights. If we don't keep the law, our rights should not be kept, and freedom is one of them. For example, when a person murders another person, the person should be punished because that person disobeyed the law and harmed other people. Even though fundamentally it is their freedom to kill others, it should be limited in those circumstances. If people really want their freedom one hundred percent to be kept, even the immoral ones, they should not live in this society, but when we see the status quo, one's freedom should be infringed in certain circumstances. On top of that, infringing freedom gives us actual benefits. Let's take the example of CCTVs. The government installs CCTVs to ensure the public's safety. We can roam around the streets freely because the government has installed CCTVs and recorded what happened. Some people might say that their freedom not to be censored is infringed, however, with CCTVs, it has given us more security. As this example tells you, infringing freedom to a certain extent in some circumstances could give us other rights and provide us more benefits. To sum up, it is sometimes acceptable to infringe upon people's freedom because it is principally right for individuals' freedom to be limited in certain circumstances, and infringement to a certain extent could actually give us more benefits. In this regard, I strongly believe that it is okay to infringe one's freedom in certain times. |
