MAN (British): This is Ryerson Community Centre. How may I help
you?
WOMAN (British): Hello. I’m enquiring about the urban gardening
workshop advertised on your website.
MAN: Yes, the one being held next week.
WOMAN: Right. On Saturday, I believe?
MAN: It’s Sunday, actually. Sunday the 5th
of March.
WOMAN: Oh, OK. I must have read it wrong. At what time
exactly is the workshop?
MAN: It will start bright and early at 8 a.m., and
should end around 4 in the afternoon. But please do keep in mind that sometimes
these things run a bit late.
WOMAN: All right. And would you mind telling me what the
programme is, exactly?
MAN: Most certainly. From 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. is a sort of
meet-and-greet for the participants and workshop facilitators. There will be
tea and biscuits served. Then from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. you’ll be learning about
making organic soil through composting, and creating a proper setup for your
urban garden.
WOMAN: OK.
MAN: Then we’ll have a break from 11 to 11:30 before
the session on seeds.
WOMAN: An entire session on seeds?
MAN: Why yes. It’s very important to understand where our seeds today
come from so that you can make good choices about where to purchase them. You
have to decide whether you’ll buy genetically modified seeds or seeds from
non-GMO farmers. It’s quite complex, actually.
WOMAN: I see.
MAN: That will last until, oh, 12:30 or so. And that
will lead to demonstrations of seed planting and garden tending. The
facilitator will show you how to care for your urban garden with basic
gardening tools. They’ll give you some fantastic tips that are specific to
urban gardening.
WOMAN: Uh-huh.
MAN: And lastly, you’ll learn how to harvest your
garden. That part will start around 2:30 and should end at 3:30 or so.
Following that, between 3:30 and 4, will be for questions.
WOMAN: That’s quite a full day.
MAN: Indeed. Make sure to get enough sleep the night
before!

A
WOMAN: How much does this workshop cost?
MAN: We have a set price for our daylong workshops,
which is £30. That covers all of the instruction, the materials, and the snacks
and beverages.
WOMAN: OK. That’s fair. What methods of payment are
available?
MAN: Cash would be best, but we can take major credit
cards. And please note the payments must be made at the time of registration.
WOMAN: How far in advance do I need to register?
MAN: I suggest getting on that as soon as possible, as
there is limited seating. But in general, registration closes two days prior to
the workshop.
WOMAN: Can I just register now?
MAN: Certainly. I’ll just need your full name first.
WOMAN: Cynthia Maverson.
MAN: Cynthia what?
WOMAN: Maverson. M-A-V-E-R-S-O-N.
MAN: Great. And what is your date of birth, Cynthia?
WOMAN: November 9, 1978.
MAN: Thank you. Will you be coming by yourself?
WOMAN: Yes. Well, maybe. There might be one friend
wanting to tag along. Should I register her a place in advance just in case, or
just have her call in later?
MAN: It’s up to you, but we do require full
pre-payment. So if you register her and she doesn't show up, you won’t get a
refund.
WOMAN: Hmm. Then I’ll just wait and let her take care of
it.
MAN: That’s just fine. Now, please dress very casually,
and in clothes you don’t mind getting some dirt on. Also, you may want to bring
a lunch for the break period.
WOMAN: Will do. Anything else?
MAN: No. That should do it. We
look forward to seeing you next Sunday.
