It is thought by many
that decreasing speed limits is the most effective way to guarantee safety on
road. Although regulating speed limits of vehicles may be helpful, I believe
that it has both benefits and drawbacks and this essay will present other
measures to be implemented.
On the one hand, reducing
speed limits will help to keep road safety. As most of drivers care about speed
limits on road, they will adapt their speed appropriately to the changed limits,
which may result in not only safe driving and a decrease in the number of car
accidents. On the other hand, slower driving can give rise to traffic
congestions. Applying the decreased speed limits uniformly would rather impede
a smooth flow of vehicles on relatively narrow streets, leading to more time to
reach motorways and thus arousing traffic congestion particularly during rush
hours. Thus, it would be inefficient to adopt such a reduction of speed limits
everywhere.
There are numerous
solutions to maintain road safety, one of which is raising drivers’ awareness
through education programmes. Organizing compulsory courses to remind drivers
of road safety would increase their awareness of benefits of safe driving and
miserable outcomes of dangerous driving. On top of that, imposing a higher
amount of fine or penalty on violation can be an effective way to help drivers
always keep safety. A good example can be seen in New Zealand that gives
substantial points of penalty and fine to those who drive with excessive speed,
which enable the rate of vehicle accidents to remain low.
In conclusion, road
safety requires a balanced approach as it is secured by multiple factors. I
consider that along with the regulation of speed limits, education and penalty
schemes ought to be effectively implemented by the government. (295 words) |
