There might be some people who believe that parents can control what their children do, and their children’s behavior is not affected by television, movies and so on. However, I personally disagree with the above idea for the two subsequent reasons: First, television has a bad influence on children. Second, parents are unfamiliar with the development of technologies.
To begin with, watching television has a negative impact on children’s behavior. A lot of television programs feature a significant amount of violence, sexuality and vulgar language, and all of these leave a strong impression in the minds of children. Let me bring up my cousin’s story as an example. He likes to watch comedy shows on television. He has learned many rude words from them, and used them frequently to my aunt and uncle since the characters on shows used them freely. So they have scolded him but he still thinks that those rude words are funny and inoffensive. They tried to prevent him from using those bad words, but it did not work well. If it had not been for television, he would not have learned such bad words.
On top of that, up-to-date technologies make it difficult for parents to communicate with their children. Over the past decades, a wide range of telecommunication means such as SNS and Facebook, have been introduced, all of which children use much more than their parents. Let me take my experience as an example. I enjoy interacting with my friends via Twitter. However, my mom does not understand why I spend a lot of time on doing Twitter, which makes her frustrated and angry very often. She is not aware how it is efficient for me to get in touch with friends and get resources and information I need. It would have been better if she had tried to understand why I do twitter so much, which would make me listen to her.
To sum up, children’s behavior is largely affected by television. Also, new technologies make it hard for parents and children to communicate each other. In this regard, I firmly believe that today’s parents are not likely to control their children do.
