Undoubtedly, public services play an important role in people's lives in many places where they work or play. However, when a country faces an economic crisis, they tend to spend less money on these public services. There are many public services such as schools, public libraries, public transit and police. If I were asked to choose one of these services that the government should cut its budget, I would say that the government should spend less money on police when they encounter economic crisis because it plays a less important role compared to others. There are several reasons as follows.
To begin with, reducing budget on education such as schools and public libraries will not be helpful to the country in the long term. Recovering damaged economy requires many intelligent and creative people to solve country problems, invent new technology and create new jobs. Raising these geniuses requires high-quality education. However, when the country cuts its budget on education such as libraries and schools, the quality of education will be lowered, and it will be hard to discover talented children, which will hamper the country's development. For example, South Korea was a very poor country in the past after the Korean War. Now, it has become one of the countries that have high GDP. Many economic experts say this enormous growth of economy was possible with the help of education. With a good public education system, the country could raise many experts in various fields such as economy and science. This led the country to a positive way and helped them to overcome several economic crises like oil shocks. Some people might say that when the government reduces its support for police service, the country might face chaos due to loosen social order. However, unlike their worries, many countries, including South Korea, showed reduced criminal rate when the education quality improves. Without this investment on education, South Korea would still have been under the burden of economic crisis.
Also, reducing public transportation will negatively affect the environment. The provision of convenient and cheap public transportation encourages people to use public transit such as bus or subway instead of their own cars. This can reduce traffic jams and greenhouse gases such as CO2. A lot of researchers conducted by scientists say that gas emission from cars takes up the largest portion in climate changes. When the government spends less money on public transit, it will make global warming much worse than before, which will affect our lives. Besides, when people use public transportation instead of cars, the work of police such as dealing with traffics and car accidents will reduce. Therefore, the government can save its budget.
All things considered, the advantages of public education and transportation far outweighs those of police services. All in all, the government should spend its budget wisely and efficiently.
