JAG REQUIREMENTS AND NEXT STEPS
Whether you’re studying to become a lawyer, want to or are already practicing law, you’ll need to meet these requirements to become a Judge Advocate:
- Have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school
- Be admitted to the bar of any U.S. state, commonwealth, or territory
- Be a U.S. Citizen
What is the Department’s citizenship and residency requirement for Entry Level and Experienced Attorneys?
Congress generally prohibits agencies from employing non-citizens within the United States, except for a few narrow exceptions as set forth in the annual Appropriations Act .
However, please be advised that the appointment of non-U.S. citizens is extremely rare; such appointments would be possible only if necessary to accomplish the Department's mission and would be subject to strict security requirements. Applicants who hold dual citizenship in the U.S. and another country will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
